Child Locked Inside The Car? Know What To Do

Locksmiths come across many types of emergencies in their line of work. One of the most dangerous types of these emergencies is where a child has been locked inside a car, either accidentally or otherwise. Such a scenario can happen to you if the kid locks the car by themselves while you're outside. The same can happen where the car locks itself after you're done tucking the child in the back seat and have left the keys in the car. If you find yourself in such a situation, it's important that you know what to do and what not to do. Read on for some helpful advice.

What to do: Contact a car locksmith. The only person that can safely and expertly unlock your car at this time is a car locksmith. If you have an auto locksmith in mind, call them immediately. It helps if they are an emergency locksmith because that means they are available 24/7. If you don't have a locksmith in mind, ask around from individuals or any nearby establishment. Seek emergency help from other sources. Being an emergency situation, you should seek to get as much help as possible, even if you've already talked to an emergency locksmith. Call the police hotline and see if they can send anyone your way. As you wait for the emergency help to arrive, see if you can get the child to unlock the door from the inside. However, you should only do this if the child is within close proximity of the keys or door locks. If they are not, let them remain in their position.

What NOT to do: Don't break the window. Although your instincts might urge you to break the car window and open the car, don't. Breaking the window is not the best way to address the situation. The glass shards from the window might injure you or the child inside the car. In other cases, you might be suspected of having ill intents. Alternatively, the car window might fail to break at all, getting you even more agitated.

Don't panic. Most importantly, don't do anything that might give you reason to alarm your child. In most cases, your child might not realise that they are in danger. It's better to let the situation remain that way. In that regard, don't start screaming, banging the car, shouting to the kid, or doing any other action that might get them worried.

Once the car locksmith arrives on site, they will quickly and calmly disable the car locks for you. An auto locksmith can also duplicate new keys for you if you have lost your master keys.
